Falling plastic futures can support a review of PE bag prices, but they do not create an automatic, equal-percentage reduction in a finished bag quotation. The relevant physical resin grade must become cheaper to buy, and the bag specification, conversion work and commercial terms must still be compared. This guide explains that connection for packaging buyers; it is not a live market-price bulletin.

Futures, physical resin and a finished bag are three different prices

A futures contract refers to a defined market and delivery period. A resin supplier sells an available grade at an agreed location and on agreed payment and delivery terms. A bag manufacturer quotes a converted product. CME Group describes basis as the difference between cash and futures prices. That distinction explains why a screen price and a physical purchase price need not move together each day.

The Dalian Commodity Exchange plastic contract, commonly followed as L futures, refers to linear low-density polyethylene, or LLDPE. The CSRC’s original Dalian LLDPE contract announcement identifies that material specifically. It is not a price for every LDPE, HDPE, coloured compound or finished packaging bag. Check the resin actually required by the application before selecting a benchmark.

Why a cheaper resin does not make every bag equally cheaper

Raw material is one part of a finished bag. Film blowing, cutting and sealing, printing, setup, inspection and packing also contribute. Zipper profiles, adhesive closures or reinforced handles can introduce additional inputs. Freight, exchange rates and the selected trade terms can change the delivered price again. A decline in one input therefore needs to be assessed within the same product and delivery scope.

The result also depends on material weight. Two bags with the same face dimensions can contain different amounts of PE because of single-wall thickness, gussets, bottom construction or extra components. Compare the same approved specification rather than reducing thickness or changing the resin blend without agreement.

When should buyers ask for an updated price?

Ask when a supplier can recheck the appropriate physical grade and the order is open for review. Existing resin purchases, allocated stock and agreed order terms may affect a particular quotation. There is no universal number of days after a futures fall when all bag prices must change. A new quote, a repeat order and a confirmed order can be at different commercial stages.

A useful request is: “Please review the same approved bag against the current applicable resin purchase basis, and show any revised unit price, quotation validity and delivery terms.” Include the previous specification version and quantity. This keeps the discussion focused on a comparable product rather than a headline percentage.

A practical comparison checklist

  • Identify the futures product and contract month separately from the physical resin grade.

  • Keep bag structure, dimensions and single-wall thickness constant.

  • Confirm printing, closures, quantity and packing scope.

  • Compare prices on the same currency, unit, tax and delivery basis.

  • Request a dated quotation; do not assume an existing order has been repriced.

Hengyi's view: review the quote, keep the specification fixed

At Hengyi, we see a fall in L futures as a useful signal to review a comparable packaging quotation. It is not a percentage to copy directly onto every finished bag. Our recommendation is to start with the same material requirement, single-wall thickness, dimensions, printing and quantity, then compare a dated offer on the same delivery basis.

For a buyer, a lower material cost is valuable only if the packaging still does its intended job. A thinner bag or a different blend should be presented as a separate specification alternative, rather than being hidden inside a supposedly unchanged quotation. Any actual price revision belongs in the applicable offer, with its quantity, validity and terms clearly stated.

Frequently asked questions

If plastic futures fall 10%, should my bags cost 10% less?

Not automatically. That percentage would apply to the specified futures comparison, not to every physical resin or the full converted bag price. The grade, resin weight and other cost components must be reviewed.

Does a crude-oil fall prove PE resin is cheaper today?

No. It may change the discussion around upstream costs, but a usable packaging quote needs the appropriate physical resin and the actual order specification. An oil percentage is not a PE bag price formula.

Can I use this article as today’s Hengyi price list?

No. It is a purchasing explanation, not a current resin assessment or a company discount announcement. Request the applicable quotation for your order.

Request a specification-based review

Hangzhou Hengyi Packaging Material Co., Ltd. supplies custom PE packaging. Review our clear and printed PE flat bags or PE film roll range, then send your bag drawing, single-wall thickness, material, artwork and order quantity. Ask for the applicable price unit, quotation validity and delivery terms. A market headline does not replace an agreed quotation.
