An A4 sheet measures 21 × 29.7 cm. Compare this fixed rectangle with a bag's width and usable height, then allow room for the handle, seals, folds and the thickness of the contents. A bag's outside dimensions alone do not guarantee that an A4 document will fit below its handle.

Why an A4 sheet is a useful size reference

Centimetres can be difficult to visualise when buying packaging online. A familiar sheet of paper gives retail buyers a consistent reference for the front of a shopping bag. It can help distinguish a compact document bag from a wider merchandise bag before discussing a physical sample.

Keep the paper size fixed across the comparison. Enlarging both the paper and the bag independently makes the display attractive but removes its value as a size guide. In our illustration, upright bags contain an upright A4 rectangle; landscape bags use the same sheet rotated through 90 degrees. The front faces are drawn at the same scale. The small visible side and base folds provide depth without changing the front-face measurement.

A4 footprint illustration, not a loading test. Semi-transparency makes the paper visible and does not represent the actual opacity of the yellow sample. Click the image to enlarge. The six sizes and gusset figures are illustrative references, not confirmed stocked specifications.

Compare portrait and landscape examples

The following outside width and height examples explain the drawing. They are examples for discussing a custom specification, rather than a list of ready-stock sizes. The extra gusset figures in the image do not increase the front-face width or height used in this comparison.

What to check

25 × 35 cm

21 cm wide × 29.7 cm high

Limited spare height; confirm the space below the hand hole.

30 × 38 cm

Portrait

Compare usable height and clearance at the bottom seal.

35 × 41 cm

More front-face room does not establish load capacity.

35 × 25 cm

29.7 cm wide × 21 cm high

A low bag may have little clearance below the handle.

40 × 30 cm

Landscape

Allow for the packed item thickness and base folds.

Check the required carry position and the finished sample.

Move from a flat sheet to a packed product

A single sheet has almost no thickness. A folder, garment, shoebox or stack of brochures does. Measure the complete packed item, including any box, tissue or protective wrap. Send its width, height, depth and intended packed weight alongside the desired bag dimensions. A bottom gusset creates expandable depth; it should not be added to the stated front-face area to claim that a particular item will fit.

For documents, check whether the paper must remain below the hand hole, whether it can project above the opening and whether a folder is included. For clothing or gifts, request a filled sample or a packing trial using the actual item. Do not treat the picture as a strength, capacity or opacity test.

How Hengyi uses this information

Hangzhou Hengyi Packaging Material Co., Ltd. reviews custom PE packaging requests against the buyer's dimensions, construction, material, single-side thickness and artwork. The A4 guide provides a starting point for that discussion; the approved sample and agreed drawing define the finished specification.

Frequently asked questions

Does a 25 × 35 cm bag automatically fit A4?

No. Those outside dimensions must be checked against the usable internal area and the space occupied by the handle and seals.

Is the yellow bag necessarily transparent?

No. The see-through treatment is used to reveal the paper for comparison. Actual appearance depends on the confirmed film, colour and thickness.

Does a larger bag carry more weight?

Not necessarily. Film, gauge, handle construction, seals and the shape of the contents all matter. Suitability needs an agreed sample or test.
